Commodore’s Corner

It is a pleasure and a privilege to write to you as the Commodore of the GLPYC and to look forward to the summer of 2008!  The YC Board of Directors and Officers has been working this fall and winter to plan the recreational and social activities for young people and adults.

On a sad note, Bob Congdon will not be returning as Director of Operations, and instead will devote his time to his responsibilities as Vice President of the GLP Association.  We will miss his enthusiasm and dedication to the Yacht Club and appreciate all of his efforts last summer.

Fortunately, Jay Washburn has agreed to take the position as Director of Operations.  Jay brings his life-long experience at Groton Long Point together with expertise in coaching, sailing and teaching.  We are delighted that Jay is willing to share these skills with the Yacht Club.  Lesley deLabry will return as the Yacht Club Office Manager, helping you in the office with registration for children’s and adults’ activities.

Looking forward to summer this year means continuing the traditional activities we all enjoy:  children’s tennis,  sports,  swimming and sailing classes;  junior sailing;  adult tennis,  tap-dancing and yoga classes;  theater,  art,  golf,  dance and craft classes;  adult social events,  among the manydaily activities we offer.  We hope you join us at the Hello and Goodbye parties, at Family Night and the fireworks, at children’s and adults’ tennis tournaments, at kiddie dances, and at Main Beach watching the A-boat races and regattas.  We encourage you to consider joining the Yacht Club as a Patron to help us underwrite the cost of our instructional activities.  If you become a Patron, you will receive free admission to the Hello and Goodbye parties, add to your collection of Yacht Club glasses, and be welcomed at the Patrons’ Brunch / Open House on July 13th.

Many thanks to the Yacht Club Board members who are volunteering their time to plan this summer’s activities for you and your families!  We all are excited about welcoming you back to GLP this summer!

Sue Aberbach, Commodore
