Introduction to the Groton Long Point Yacht Club

Our organization has a rich history, filled with tradition dating to the early 1920s when GLP was first being developed as a beach community.  Formally chartered as Groton Long Point Yacht Club in 1934, we continue to strive for the Yacht Club's programs to be recreational and enjoyable for all.  There are activities for children and adults, and the first step to becoming an active participant in the summertime activities is to become a member of the Groton Long Point Yacht Club!

Membership

People can join the GLPYC anytime during office hours in the summertime.  It can also be done at course registration, which is held at the beginning of July and August.  Those seeking membership must be residents of Groton Long Point or a relative of a GLP resident.  Children can become members only if their parent/guardian is also a member.  The GLPYC has "regular" or "Patron" membership.  The Patron membership includes regular membership, free admission to the Hello and Goodbye Summer Cocktail Parties, and two complimentary yacht club glasses.  The additional funds given as a Patron are used towards enhancing programs, purchasing equipments, etc.

Programs

The classes offered to both adults and children are taught by trained staff in the area they teach.  Specific age minimums for classes are determined for participant safety.  Evening activities are also scheduled for both adults and  children.  Kiddie dances and movies are traditions.  We also strive to provide a variety of talents on a weekly bases.  Special weekend events such as Family Night are for members as well!

Sailing at GLPYC

The GLPYC, traditionally a sailing club, offers classes for children from beginner level in the inner lagoon through competitive level out in the open sound.  The GLPYC does not own boats or provide rentals.  Members must arrange ownership or rental of boats independently.

Beginner Sailing : Seashells

C Class is for the true beginner. Sailors are minimum ally age seven and must have swimming ability so as to not to be nervous about possible capsizing.  Two children are typically in each boat, a captain and a crew.

B Class is designed for the novice to intermediate level sailor.  Racing strategy is taught, in addition to developing confidence on the water.  Captains and crews work together to refine skills.

A Class is for individual sailors, in which the sailor is both captain and crew.  It is the most competitive of the Seashell levels and is typically for sailors ages 10-12.

Junior Sailing : Optimist

The GLPYC added "Opti's" to it's junior program in 1998.  Designed for one sailor, this boat offers speed and quick response.  Participants must be at least age 9 and have intermediate sailing ability.  Sailors compete in regattas around Southeast CT as part of the program.

Junior SailingBlue Jay

Blue Jays have been part of the Yacht Club's program since the 1950s and some of our sailors have gone on the compete at national and international levels.  Classes are divided between an "Alpha" and "Beta" Fleet.  Alpha is the top skill level sailors and Beta is novice to intermediate level.  Both fleets participate in regattas around the region, while the Alpha's may go on to Larchmont Junior regatta and the Blue Jay Nationals.  Sailors must be at least age 11 and possess a strong knowledge of sailing and racing skills.

Junior Sailing : 420

The Club 420 has been added to our Junior Sailing Program in 2002.  We are excited to expand our program to include the 420 which is rugged, competitive, and fun to sail and race.  Advanced sailing ability is required.

Tennis

Children : Tennis lessons are offered from beginner level through advanced, and is separated by age.  Children as young as age six may participate.

The Sports program is similar to gym-like activities held in schools, focusing on a mix of cooperative and competitive games and activities.  These classes are separated by age for purposes of physical development, coordination abilities and safety.  Sportsmanship and proper communication is emphasized and expected at all levels.

Yoga

The adult program is held two times per week n the early morning.  Classes are taught by a local yoga instructor.  You can sign up at Registration or at the YC office.
