NOTICE
TO PARENTS
SEASHELLS
The Seashell Aide
will be on hand each day at
8:45
to unlock the shed for those sailors who keep their sail bag
here. The Seashell aide will help those children who have not
learned how to rig their boats, help bring the boats to the water and assist
at the end of class when the boats are coming back in. Our goal is to help
preserve these old boats while providing some basic training to children on how
to set up and take down their sails, rudder & tiller. If you plan to rig the
seashell with your child, we ask that you do this prior to the start of class so
only sailors and instructors are in the seashell area once class
begins (Please keep small children on the other side of the bench as
well).
We ask that parents remain behind the benches and refrain from coaching
the children. Our staff is eager to teach sailing and make sure the children
are having fun. It is important for all sailors to know how to rig their boats
and captain and crew should work as a team from start to finish. It is also
essential that children give themselves enough time before class to get their
boat ready.
Out on the water, the instructors will observe and advise sailors so they
“learn by doing”. We hope you will support this program and come to
encourage and cheer on the sailors!
If you have a
specific concern about your sailor, please discuss if with the head instructor
either before or after class. If you have a concern about the
program, please come to the Yacht Club during business hours (M-F, 9-12 &
3-5
pm
).
Positive feedback is also welcome!
Please Note:
Participation in the Seashell program is contingent on a fair and acceptable
placement of sailors in boats. The Yacht Club and staff are not involved in
buying, renting, borrowing or “finding” of boats for sailors. We make every
attempt to accommodate all sailors who do not own boats but cannot guarantee a
workable solution.
Also, if your beginner sailor is uncomfortable or afraid of sailing,
please consider private lessons in addition to classes. Your child will get the
individual attention they need that is not always possible during class time.
Participation in Seashell classes B & C
requires a full month commitment. Children are pared up and assigned to a
boat. If a child is absent for days, the other partner is
left unable to sail (race) or is put into another team boat which causes
friction among the ranks. Please discuss any unusual situation with the head
instructor.
