Every summer, the Yacht Club hosts two regattas that are open to all participants who are active in the Opti and 420 classes. Typically, we host a 420 regatta in July and an Opti regatta in August. Regattas are all-day events with several races held that are attended by Yacht Club sailors as well as sailors from six or seven neighboring yacht clubs. Parent involvement is required to help with preparing lunches for the sailors, delivering lunches on the water to the sailors, providing and manning your private boat as a safety boat for the day, and providing race administration support.
In addition to the home regattas, many yacht clubs along the Connecticut shoreline host 420 and Opti regattas during the summer months. Typically, the GLPYC junior sailing staff will pick several nearby regattas, usually including the Opti regatta at Mason’s Island and the 420 regatta at Fisher’s Island, to which to bring the GLPYC sailors. The instructors will convoy or deliver the boats to the regatta and will provide coaching support/oversight for the day. A GLPYC sailor can attend additional regattas on their own.
