Beginner Tennis (age 7-8) covers tennis basics including parts of the racket and tennis court, eye/hand coordination drills, proper tennis grip, and the basics of forehands, backhands, and volleys.  Instructors work with different ability levels as time and class sizes allow.  The class meets Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 8:55 a.m.

Junior Tennis (age 9-12) builds on basic skills, including forehands, backhands, volleys, and serves, adding scoring games and sets as well as continuing to emphasize tennis etiquette.  The class meets from 9:00 to 9:55 a.m. or from 10:00 to 10:55 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Teen Tennis (age 13+) builds on the stroke development and emphasis on tennis etiquette from the Junior Tennis class, concentrating on serving, game play, and strategy for those age thirteen and over.  The class meets Monday through Friday from 11:00 to 11:55 a.m.

Introduction to Tennis (age 5-6) provides instruction on elemental tennis strokes and basics of the game and court etiquette. This class meets Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m.

Tournaments - Youth members who can serve and maintain a rally are welcome to play in our youth tennis tournaments. We offer a variety of tournaments for boys and girls singles, doubles, and mixed doubles for different age groups.  Check the summer calendar for dates, times and age levels.

Anyone who would like to play in a youth tournament should sign up in class the day before or the day of the tournament, at the courts, or in the Yacht Club office before noon the day of the tournament.  There is no charge to play, but we do ask you to respect our sign-up policy (and withdraw if you find you cannot play) as it helps our staff identify the best tournament format given the number and ability of those signed up. Youth 16 and over are welcome to play in our adult tournaments, held on Tuesdays (women) and Saturdays (mixed doubles, men).  All participants must be members of the Yacht Club in order to play.

We occasionally offer other types of youth/family tournaments—check the calendar for details.

Please note that these matches are intra-Yacht Club, and do not involve members of other yacht clubs. Those who want to compete against other yacht clubs should sign up for the tennis team.

Tennis Team

The tennis team is for experienced players who can serve and maintain a rally, and includes match play and strategy.  The team meets on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and plays both home and away matches with other local yacht clubs and recreational organizations.  A schedule is provided at the start of each month regarding practice and matches.  Please sign up for the appropriate age level:  1:00 to 2:00 for those thirteen and over, 2:00 to 3:00 for those ages nine through twelve. The tennis team meets at the kids’ courts on West Shore Avenue.  Fees include a Yacht Club tennis team t-shirt.  Players wear white shorts or tennis skirts for match play.

A Permission Slip is required to participate on the Tennis Team.  This will be emailed participants after registration.  It can also be found by clicking the link below, reviewed, completed, and emailed to glpychelpdesk@hotmail.com.

Adult tennis classes

We offer a variety of classes for adults. All classes meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the adult courts on Pacific Street.

Intermediate is for players with some tennis experience but who still need to develop better techniques and strategy.  These players are ready to start rallying and playing live ball.  Focus will be on consistency, footwork, and introduction to doubles strategy. This class meets from 8:00 to 8:55 a.m.

Advanced focuses on more advanced stroke production, shot selection, and doubles strategy and tactics and is for players who have had competitive experience and demonstrate stronger tennis skills.  Players should be able to hit cooperatively with others and sustain a rally. This class meets from 9:00 to 9:55 a.m.

“Hit and Fit” will feature an hour of continuous faster pace drilling and point play with the focus on hitting lots of tennis balls and continuous movement.  Music may be incorporated to promote exercise and fun. This is for competitive players who can hit cooperatively with others while sustaining a rally. This class meets from 10:00 to 10:55 a.m.

Beginner/Tennis Fundamentals is for players who are new to the game of tennis and have little or no prior experience.  The focus will be on stroke development and beginning to learn how to have a controlled rally and keep the ball in play. This class meets from 11:00 t- 11:55 a.m.

Adult tennis tournaments

Tournaments - We offer a variety of adult tennis tournaments each month.  Our women’s tournaments are on Tuesdays and include a less formal draw tournament (just sign up, no partner needed), doubles, and singles.  Finals for each of these tournaments are on Thursdays and you must be available for the finals in order to play in the tournament.  Saturdays feature mixed doubles, and men’s singles and doubles.  Finals for the mixed doubles and men’s tournaments are held on Sunday; you must be available in order to play. Check the calendar for dates, times, age groups, and other information.

Adult tournaments are open to all Yacht Club members age 16 and over (those younger can play in our youth tournaments). You must sign up in the Yacht Club office by noon the day before the tournament to allow our pros to determine format and seeding. You can also sign up online until noon the day before the tournament.  If it is a doubles tournament, our online system will require you to provide the name of your partner.  If your partner has not signed up for the tournament before noon the day before the tournament, we will attempt to charge his or her account. If we are not successful (because they are not a current club member or do not have an active credit card on file), your registration will not be valid and we will refund your tournament fee, less a $2.00 handling fee). There is a minimal cost to play which includes the tournament, balls, and light refreshments. While many players in doubles tournaments already have partners, if you do not have one and would like to play, please let the office know and we will try to match you up. If you register online, the tournament rules are sent with your confirmation email; they are available in the office as well.

We occasionally offer other tournaments—check the calendar for details.
