Optimist Program
The Groton Long Point Yacht Club Opti Program is designed for sailors ages 9–15 who are ready to continue developing their sailing skills in a fun, supportive, and challenging environment. Sailors are divided into two groups based on experience: Green Fleet and Red, White, and Blue Fleet. This allows each sailor to receive the instruction and coaching appropriate for their skill level.
Our Green Fleet focuses on learning the fundamentals of racing, building confidence, and developing strong boat-handling skills through on-the-water instruction and friendly competition. Sailors in the Red, White, and Blue Fleets take a more race-focused approach, refining more advanced techniques while competing in regular practices and races.
Throughout the summer, sailors travel to neighboring yacht clubs to compete in Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association (ECSA) regattas. In-class race results earn sailors points toward monthly standings, with awards presented at the end of each month to recognize dedication, improvement, and performance.
All Optis in the Junior Sailing Program must have their own dolly and boat cover for proper storage and efficient, safe launching. Completion of the Junior Sailing Statement of Understanding is required for participation in the Junior Sailing Optimist Program.
